Period 4: Emily Bronte

Questions to consider:
  1. What conclusions do you come to based on Bronte's comparisons in "Love and Friendship"?
  2. What images does "Stars" create as you read it?
  3. What does the speaker in "Stars" prefer and why?

Love and Friendship
Love is like the wild rose-briar,
Friendship like the holly-tree --
The holly is dark when the rose-briar blooms
But which will bloom most contantly?
The wild-rose briar is sweet in the spring,
Its summer blossoms scent the air;
Yet wait till winter comes again
And who wil call the wild-briar fair?
Then scorn the silly rose-wreath now
And deck thee with the holly's sheen,
That when December blights thy brow
He may still leave thy garland green.

Stars

Ah! why, because the dazzling sun
Restored our Earth to joy,
Have you departed, every one,
And left a desert sky?

All through the night, your glorious eyes
Were gazing down in mine,
And, with a full heart's thankful sighs,
I blessed that watch divine.

I was at peace, and drank your beams
As they were life to me;
And revelled in my changeful dreams,
Like petrel on the sea.

Thought followed thought, star followed star,
Through boundless regions, on;
While one sweet influence, near and far,
Thrilled through, and proved us one!

Why did the morning dawn to break
So great, so pure, a spell;
And scorch with fire the tranquil cheek,
Where your cool radiance fell?

Blood-red, he rose, and, arrow-straight,
His fierce beams struck my brow;
The soul of nature sprang, elate,
But mine sank sad and low!

My lids closed down, yet through their veil
I saw him, blazing, still,
And steep in gold the misty dale,
And flash upon the hill.

I turned me to the pillow, then,
To call back night, and see
Your worlds of solemn light, again,
Throb with my heart, and me!

It would not do--the pillow glowed,
And glowed both roof and floor;
And birds sang loudly in the wood,
And fresh winds shook the door;

The curtains waved, the wakened flies
Were murmuring round my room,
Imprisoned there, till I should rise,
And give them leave to roam.

Oh, stars, and dreams, and gentle night;
Oh, night and stars, return!
And hide me from the hostile light
That does not warm, but burn;

That drains the blood of suffering men;
Drinks tears, instead of dew;
Let me sleep through his blinding reign,
And only wake with you!

  2. In the poem love and friendship i came to the conclusion that she is saying that her friendship wont last longer than her love or her love is greater than her friendship for example she compared her friendship to the holly tree and her love to the briar then she followed by saying "the holly is dark when the rose briar blooms but wich will bloom most contantly?" 3. Love and Friendship!
    -Emily is saying that when her Love blossoms her friendship is die down. I came to this conclusion because in the poem she compaes her Love to roses and her friendship to Holly Trees. She goes on to say "The holly is dark when the rose briar blooms. Then she says "Nut what will bloom most constantly" as if she is questioning which is stronger.

  4. The images that I got from the poem stars is peaceful. They use words like glorious eyes,thankful sighs, changeful dreams, and sweet influence. This poem is about how the star makes this person feels when they look at the stars.

  5. I like the way how love and friendship were compared. In my opion, when you say that love is like a wild rose briar it means that love is temporary and when you compare frienship to a holly tree I think that your trying to say that friendship can be year round.

    In the poem I read "Stars" By Emily Bronte; the image i saw was a girl waiting for night to come so she can see her love.

    In the poem I read "Stars" by Emily Bronte; I think she is prefer the sun as a vampire sucking the life out of men.

  10. morayma, love is temporay it never last long it can end in a matter of seconds. when you get friendship it starts from very young meaning you have friend that is there for you from the very beginig till the very end and thats what a holly tree is a holly tree last all year round. love is there for a moment and its gone.

  11. An image that i pictured in my mind about the stars poem was that in the begining the stars had disappeared because the sun had came out; . but i think the writter is comparing the stars to the sun meaning like she rather see stars then the hot warm sun or the writter could compare the poem to a person that they really like and admire.

  12. @ morayma I think you made an excellent point!you kind of made me reconsider what I was thinking. when I read the poem I received the information as the other way around. I love the way that you clarified your statement by saying that roses dont last as llong as holly trees

  15. In the poem love and friendship i think this poems tone is nice,freely and peaceful. She is comparing friendship to love and feels like friendship is way more important then love. For example she compares friendship to a holly tree and love to the wild rose briar.

  16. 1st Question).
    The poet is talking about how you can relate "LOVE" to a rose bush and how it makes you feel all special inside and "FRIENDSHIP" the poet is talking about how friendship can stick to you like the leaves of a holly tree and it tuff like one too.
    2nd Question).
    Well in the beginning of the story it makes me feel like the poet's is talking about how the stars made everyone happy. but the poet is really only talking about herself and how she loves the stars and how is shines on her n her bedroom at night and when she wakes she wants to be with the "STARS"
    3rd Question).
    well she perfers to live in the "STARS" so she can always be truly happy when she wakes up

  18. @Deshauna & De’Jauna: Both of you have identified correctly the beautiful comparison Bronte is making between roses and love and holly and friendship. I also agree that she is discussing which is stronger. While I do think that the blooming signifies external beauty, I think that the fact holly trees are year-round makes them “more lasting.” Therefore, I believe Bronte is saying love is beautiful, but fades and comes and goes in cycles.

    @Destinee: You have identified great key words that tells the readers what the mood and tone of the poem are. Bronte has definitely gotten her message across to you because the speaker in the poem prefers the night over the sun as well.

    @Morayma & Danielle & Jewel: I think y’all’s responses relate to Deshauna and De’Jauna’s posts. Your posts answer their question, “which is stronger—love or friendship?”

    @Jade & Monica: I like that you have interpreted the personification of the sun as a man/person that the speaker is waiting for. This would explain why the speaker prefers the night stars—possibly the eyes of her loved one.

    @William: “Love and Friendship” is discussing the similarities and differences between the two. What I like about the poem is that Bronte uses metaphors to do so. The rose represents love and the holly tree represents friendship.

    @Keon: I hadn’t thought of how a holly tree could represent “how friendship can stick to you like the leaves of a holly tree.” Thanks for sharing this insight!
